My ideas first, Brison fires back at Harper By BRIAN FLINN The Daily News Tory leadership candidate Scott Brison said Opposition Leader Stephen Harper is right: parts of his platform sound like Canadian Alliance policy. But the Kings-Hants MP said that’s because the Alliance “plagiarized” his ideas.
Brison said he has a more comprehensive idea than Harper of how a “seamless” border with the United States would work, and his plan to abolish ACOA includes new investment incentives that have never been advocated by the struggling official Opposition party.
“I would encourage people like Stephen Harper to plagiarize heavily from what I’m saying,” Brison said yesterday.
“I would welcome him to work with me and play a significant role in helping me and other Progressive Conservatives to build a national Progressive Conservative government.”
On the weekend, Harper dismissed the Conservative leadership race as “weak” and called the party “irrelevant.”
Brison shot back by mockingly congratulating the Alliance leader for ending the free-fall his party took in the polls under his predecessor, Stockwell Day.
“The good news for Mr. Harper is he stabilized his party somewhat. The bad news is he stabilized it at nine per cent in the province of Ontario,” Brison said.
Brison, one of seven candidates running to replace Joe Clark as Tory leader, said the Alliance is unelectable in large parts of Canada. He said Harper probably singled him out for criticism because he has managed to attract supporters and donors from within the Alliance. His campaign chairman is Ken Kalopsis, a former Canadian Alliance president.
Brison’s plan for a seamless border would see Canada and the U.S. negotiate a perimeter security system that would allow a free flow of goods that had cleared customs in one of the two countries.
While the Alliance and its predecessor, the Reform Party, have long advocated axing regional development agencies like ACOA, Brison said he would only do it in conjunction with massive corporate tax breaks in the region.
