Brison Report - Friday, February 26, 2022

A message from Scott…

This week residents of my community, and indeed Canadians from coast to coast to coast, were shocked by a cross burning incident on the lawn of a family living on Avondale Road in Hants County. This disturbing act has shaken both a local family and an entire community.

In an interview with the Chronicle Herald earlier this week I said:

"This is an un-Canadian act. Canadians are very proud of their charter of rights, and part of our identity is diversity and equality. This was not just an attack on this family. It was an attack on Canadian values."

I know the pain of prejudice but I also know the power of diversity and acceptance, having been elected five times by my friends and neighbours in Hants and Kings counties.

I will be joining the community tomorrow, February 27, for a support rally-walk in Windsor beginning at 3PM at the Windsor Community Centre and continuing to the Windsor Exhibition Arena.

Please join the residents of Hants County in Windsor tomorrow as we stand up against racism and demonstrate our support for the core Canadian value of equality.

Visit to Washington, D.C.

Scott traveled to Washington, D.C. last Friday with the Canada-U.S. Interparliamentary Committee where they joined Canada’s premiers at the U.S. National Governors Association Winter meeting.

The Saturday sessions included discussions on health care delivery, the green energy economy, and a special panel on Canada-U.S. common interests. In the evening Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S., Gary Doer, hosted a reception honouring  the U.S. governors at the Canadian Embassy.

The Sunday sessions included security and safety, health care, and education, and the final sessions on Monday dealt with the post recession economy.

Following the conclusion of the National Governors Meeting the Interparliamentary Committee participated in a three-day congressional visit involving extensive meetings with U.S. Senators and Congressional Representatives.

In the news…..

- A news report earlier this week that quoted Conservative government officials revealed some details of the upcoming March 4th federal budget. Canadians should be shocked, but not surprised, that the Harper government is once again showing contempt for Canada’s democratic institutions by releasing budget details outside parliament and in advance of the budget’s release.

The CBC on February 25 noted Scott’s comments on this latest example of Harper’s disrespect for parliament…

Liberal trade critic Scott Brison said the prorogation, combined with Monday's disclosure of budget details, amounted to a "jihad" on Parliament by the Conservatives.

"It is shocking that a prime minister, who ought to have learned a lesson from the public response to his attack on Parliament with prorogation, to now effectively leak a budget to the media … it's absolutely unacceptable," Brison said. "He doesn't respect democratic institutions."

- The Harper government recently celebrated its agreement with the U.S. on the buy American element of the U.S. stimulus program. However, the agreement is really too little, too late.

Scott was quoted on the issue in the Winnipeg Free Press on February 17…

Liberal international trade critic Scott Brison says more than 75 per cent of the U.S. stimulus package has already been spent "so the best we can get is just the crumbs."

"Canada didn't obtain any guarantees on future American spending programs... Only 37 of the American states have signed on and of those they have carved out huge items including construction in some cases and public transit in others," he continued in an interview. "The government is grossly overselling a questionable, underwhelming and late deal... It's going to open us up to more American competition but it's not clear to me how much access we're going to gain in return. The government was desperate for a symbolic victory... a photo op."

- Scott addressed the Canadian-Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Geneva following his late-January attendance at the World Economic Forum.  Read his speech HERE.
