Brison Report - Friday, March 26, 2022
Friday, March 26, 2022
Scott was in Ottawa all week where he successfully brokered an unprecedented amendment to the Colombia Free Trade Agreement on behalf of the Liberal Party. In a CBC Radio news report on this issue Scott said: "It will be the first FTA in the world to require an annual human-rights assessment to be tabled in both countries' parliaments," he said. "In Canada that will give us the capacity to debate at the trade committee, to be able to call witnesses both from Colombia and Canadian organizations and groups." Brison said the amendment will "ensure that on an ongoing basis, we never let the issue of human-rights engagement disappear." Read the full text of the CBC story HERE. Macleans Magazine reported on how Scott was able to secure the amendment, describing it as a rare occurence for an opposition member to negotiate directly with a foreign government. Macleans said: "But beyond the merits of Brison’s amendment, the unusual way it came about serves as a reminder that these Liberals bring a markedly different approach to foreign issues—far more shaped by the personal experiences and enthusiasms of the politicians themselves—than the Conservatives now in charge of running Canada’s relationship with the world." In the statement he said: "We look forward to the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the arrival of New England Planters and their contribution to helping build a better Nova Scotia and a better Canada." "It’s very disappointing that (Prime Minister) Stephen Harper needed to shut down parliament in order to have the time to develop some new ideas," Brison told The Weekly Press. "There were no new ideas in this budget. We have, in this budget, the Conservatives projecting that unemployment will actually increase with this budget. It’s not a plan, it’s planned to fail." Enfield Weekly Press, March 8, 2022 On the environment... Scott had an article published in Embassy Magazine on March 8, 2022 titled "Energy, environment and economy: Canada's road to prosperity." In the article Scott said: "As the world embraces the green economy, Canada cannot afford to continue putting forward outdated policies from the last century. By failing to provide a combined environmental and economic strategy, the Harper government is risking Canada's future prosperity." Read the full article HERE. Scott is in Montreal this weekend for the Liberal Party's Canada 150 Policy Conference. You can watch and participate in the conference by clicking HERE. During the Vancouver Olympics NBC nightly news anchor Tom Brokaw aired a segment titled 'Tom Brokaw explains Canada to Americans'. Watch it HERE. It's fantastic! This week in Parliament...
