Brison releases names of his nominees for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal

for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal

"In recognition of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee and her commitment to public service, I am pleased to recognize the significant contribution to our community of these outstanding individuals," said Mr. Brison.

Marsden Anthony (Kennetcook)-        A successful businessperson and champion of the community of Kennetcook in Hants County. Recognized in 2012 by the East Hants and District Chamber of Commerce as Community Booster of the Year. 

Barron Blois (Gore)-        A dairy farmer operating an 8th generation family farm. His contributions to the industry include 27 years on the Dairy Farmers of Nova Scotia board, a director and chair of the Nova Scotia Milk Producers Association, and national president of the Dairy Farmers of Canada. 

Geraldine Browning (Centreville)-        Currently the Chair of the Valley African Nova Scotia Development Association she has spent the better part of her life advocating for others, whether in the role of teacher, nurse or community advocate. 

Cecil Dixon (Enfield) -        An active member of the Enfield Fire Department and chair of the 2012 North American Auto Extrication Challenge hosted by the department in September.

 Janet Eaton (Wolfville)-        A volunteer with the Sierra Club of Canada for ten years as a founding member of the Sierra Club Canada Atlantic chapter. She is a passionate advocate for more sustainable communities and a more sustainable Canada. 

Glenn Ells (Canning)-        A retired farmer and former provincial agriculture minister who writes a regular column “On the Farm” in the Advertiser newspaper. Also an author who has written two books of fiction based on his ancestors who arrived in Nova Scotia with the Planters in 1760. 

Peter Herbin (Grand Pre)-        A long-time Wolfville business operator and founding member of the Wolfville Business Development Corporation who served as co-chairman of the Nomination Grand Pré Advisory Board for the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. 

Henry Hicks (Centreville)-        The current chair of the ‘Our Community Our Health’ $8 million fundraising campaign for the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation and Valley Hospice Foundation, but also a long-time community fundraiser for organizations including Landmark East School. 

Michael Howell (Wolfville)-        A fervent advocate for slow food, farmers, school gardens and healthy lunch programs and culinary tourism. Chef Howell is the leader of Slow Food Nova Scotia, Chair of the board of Taste of Nova Scotia and is President of the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia. 

Kenneth Isles (Mount Uniacke)-        President of the Uniacke Heritage Society, instrumental in the establishment of the Mt. Uniacke Fishing Derbies, and has served with the Community Policing Program and on the Hants West and Mt.Uniacke Community Health Board.  

Frances June Jain (Coldbrook) -        Retired as a public school teacher in 2001 but has continued as an unpaid volunteer teacher to local public and private schools with a focus on teaching art. She is also a steady volunteer at Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville.

 Margaret Johnson (Shubenacadie)-        Margaret Johnson is affectionately known as Mrs. J in her community. She has been a very active volunteer since her retirement both in the Riverview United Church and as the current president of the Caring and Sharing Angel Tree Food Bank in Enfield. 

Janet Kirk (Windsor)-        Member of the Acadia University Board of Governors with a long history of volunteer service to her alma mater including serving on the Associated Alumni of Acadia University Board of Directors for 14 years, four in the position of Alumni President. 

Andrew Kirk (Windsor)-        Chair of the Windsor Rotary Club Committee responsible for Camp Mockingee and previously a town councillor and deputy mayor of the town of Windsor and retired school principal and teacher. 

Mabel McCarthy (Mount Uniacke)-        Active volunteer and President of the Uniacke and District Branch #165 Royal Canadian Legion which supports, among others things, the breakfast program at the Uniacke & District School. 

C. Keith Meerman (Wolfville)-        Arrived in Canada from Holland at age 19 and has been a member of the Wolfville Lions Club and volunteer fire department and since 2001 has been collecting recyclables to purchase toothpaste, soap and medicines to take to needy Cubans every winter. 

John Murphy (Canning)-        Served as Executive Director of the Fundy Mental Health Centre in Wolfville and Administrator and Psychiatric Social Worker at the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville. Also served as chairperson of the National Council of Welfare from 1998-2007 and as a Member of Parliament from 1993-1997. 

Janet Newton (Port Williams)-        Is retiring after 12 years as a councillor for the Municipality of the County of Kings and was previously elected the first Chairperson of the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board.  

Garnet Parker (Windsor)-        Rev. Parker is retired from the Baptist Church but over his career has been a tremendous volunteer both within the church and the community at large. 

Travis Price (Coldbrook)-        As a student in 2007 Travis co-founded Pink Shirt Day in support of a student at his school who was bullied. Price has organized anti-bullying events for the last five years as the episode evolved into an international anti-bullying movement. 

Judith Saunders (Centreville)-        Currently the General Manager of the Old Orchard Inn she has been a leading tourism advocate in Nova Scotia and has served on the boards of the Nova Scotia Innkeepers Guild, the Evangeline Trail Tourism Assoc, Destination Southwest Nova Tourism Assoc, and the Tourism Industry Assoc of Nova Scotia. 

Lloyd Smith (Wolfville)-        The senior town crier in North America with 31 years of service to his communities. Lloyd is the official Town Crier for Windsor and Honorary Crier of Kings County, West Hants, Wolfville, New Minas, Kentville and Kingston. 

Ronald Spencer (Summerville) -        The long-time and now retired fire chief of the Summervile Fire Department is representative of the dedication of all volunteer fire fighters who are vital in every rural community in Canada. 

Hanspeter Stutz (Grand Pre)-        Owner of Domaine de Grand Pré Hanspeter is a passionate advocate for quality in the Nova Scotia wine industry. He is a founding member and currently treasurer of the Winery Association of Nova Scotia and member of the Board of Directors of Taste of Nova Scotia. 

Freeman Swinamer (Windsor)-        Active volunteer with the Thre Mile Plains Community Hall Association, member of the Hants County Exhibition Ox Association for 30 years, volunteeer with the Windsor Agricultural Society and minor hockey coach. Freeman was the 2011 Municipality of West Hants Volunteer of the Year. 

Roger Taylor (Windsor)-        Roger has inspired hundreds of young and not so young musicians in Nova Scotia over many years. He established Windsor’s Dorian Hall Academy of Music in 1986, founded and directs the Four Seasons Community Orchestra and is the Director of the Hants County Community Chorale. 

Susan Ueffing (Canning)-        A Kings County singer who has performed at multiple fundraisers and senior’s homes and produced three CD’s used to raise money for various charities including the Women’s Institutes of Nova Scotia. She has also served on the Board of Directors of the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation and as a director of the Kentville Rotary Club. 

Judy Van Amerongen (Canning)-        One of the founding members of the Community Association of People for REAL Enterprise in Canning, NS that supports entrepreneurs with intellectual disabilities. The organization has become an international model of supported enterprise for intellectually disabled people. 

Marilyn Van Buskirk (Wolfville)-        Marilyn is celebrating her 40th anniversary in Scouting with the Wolfville Cub Pack. As well, she is one of the founders of the Wolfville Food Bank and is an active member of the “Granny’s” raising funds to help grandmothers who look after their grandchildren in Africa whose parents died of AIDS.
