Laurie St. Amour, Executive Director of the Wolfville Children’s Centre, accompanied by several parents and children, presented Mr. Brison with a petition signed by over 9,000 Nova Scotians. The “Raging Grannies” also sang a song written for Prime Minister Stephen Harper which further emphasized the importance of the Child Care Agreements.
“I believe it is imperative that the Prime Minister begin to hear the concerns of parents who want to see the Liberal Child Care agreements upheld,” said Brison. “Conservative Social Development Minister, Diane Finley, admits that their proposed tax incentives are not effective in creating child care spaces. Our parents deserve choice in Child Care. This petition demonstrates a strong opposition to Prime Ministers Harper’s plan and an equally strong endorsement of the Liberal approach.”
“We can have all the debate that we want surrounding the issue of Child Care, but the bottom line remains that there are simply not enough quality child care spaces in this country, period. End of discussion,” said Debbie Reimer from Apple Tree Landing Children’s Centre.
The Early Learning and Child Care Agreement was signed between the Province of Nova Scotia and the previous Liberal government of Canada on May 16, 2021 to support the development of quality early learning and child care. With the financial support from the Federal Government of more than $137 million for five years, Nova Scotia families and children would have seen higher access to quality and affordable early learning and child care spaces. The Liberal plan would have ensured that the provinces had the flexibility to determine the most effective way to deliver programs in their own jurisdictions.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the representatives from the Wolfville Children’s Centre for presenting me with this petition and also Circle Time for Child Care for their hard work and dedication to parents and children here in Nova Scotia,” said Brison. “I want the agreements signed with the provinces upheld so that our children receive the best in early learning and child care.”
